Rebuilding Mobility After Stroke

Jason experienced a stroke in early 2024, resulting in left-sided paresis, which significantly impacted his mobility and independence. Tasks such as standing, transferring, and walking became challenging and required the use of assistive devices and carer support.

Determined to regain control over his life, Jason enrolled in our Stand Walk Run program, an intensive stroke rehab program combining physiotherapy, exercise physiology, and home-based practice. His personal goal? To walk into a cinema again and enjoy a movie on his own.

Why Intensity Matters in Stroke Rehab

High-intensity, repetitive practice is crucial to drive neuroplastic change after a neurological event. For people recovering from stroke, targeted repetition of functional tasks like walking can significantly improve mobility outcomes.

Our multidisciplinary team sees Jason four times a week for 90-minute sessions, providing focused gait retraining after stroke to improve strength, balance, and functional walking.

The Role of the LEXO in Gait Retraining

At week six of Jason’s program, we introduced the LEXO robotic gait trainer, a cutting-edge device that enables safe, intensive, and adjustable robot-assisted walking therapy.

Using overhead straps, we’re able to reduce weight-bearing and customise walking parameters to target specific phases of the gait cycle—such as weight shift, stance, and swing. This enables Jason to practice correct movement patterns with both support and feedback, creating the ideal environment for effective stroke recovery.

Real-Time Feedback Enhances Motivation and Results

One of the most powerful features of the LEXO is its real-time visual feedback. Jason can see how his steps are improving and which areas need more focus. For our therapists, this data allows us to track progress, adjust interventions, and ensure we’re meeting Jason’s goals.

Achieving Milestones in Post-Stroke Recovery

Just last week, Jason achieved a significant milestone—he is now walking with the assistance of a quad stick. This is a remarkable step forward after only a few months of focused stroke rehabilitation.
