ARC has U-Step Walkers in the clinic, which we trial with our clients. If needed, we can also arrange for a trial at home so you can see if the U-Step Walker works for you in your own environment. Our physiotherapists have put together some information to help those considering a U -Step Walker.

What is the U-Step Walker?

The U-Step Walker is an ultra-stable walker designed for people with neurological conditions. The patented U-shape base braces you in every direction, which provides the stability you need to improve your independence and reduce your risk of falling.

The U-Step Walker is not your typical push walker. The unique features include:

• At 9.1kg, the walker is very unlikely to tip compared to regular walkers.
• Improved stability by placing the wheels in the middle of the base.
• Smaller turning circle of 74 cm, compared to 127 cm with other rollators – great for small rooms like the bathroom!
• Rolling resistance means the walker will not run away from you – which is a very common problem with regular walkers!
• An innovative braking system puts you in complete control – you squeeze the ‘brakes to go and release them to stop.
• It can be easily transported as it folds up neatly.
• Optional laser and sound cueing – great for clients with Parkinson’s disease – although the laser will not be seen easily when used outdoors.

Who is it for?

The U-Step Walker was originally created for people with Parkinson’s disease to help them increase their independence and reduce their risk of falls. However, due to its solid construction and the unique features listed above, the U-Step Walker is great for people with all types of neurological conditions.

The U-Step Walker might be for you if you have a neurological condition and:

• You need some help with your walking.
• You have frequent falls.
• You have lost your independence because your confidence in your walking has decreased.
• You have tried a regular walker, but you found it unstable or difficult to control.
• You have confined spaces in your house, such as the kitchen and bathrooms.

Can NDIS fund the U-Step?

If you are eligible, the U-Step Walker may be able to be funded by the NDIS. Your Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist will be able to discuss this with you further.
