“Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”: Reema’s Rehab Journey to Wheelchair Basketball
When Reema first came to Advance Rehab Centre, sport wasn’t even on the radar. But just seven months later, she’s representing the Sydney University Lions in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) — and proudly helping the team secure a runner-up finish in the 2025 national championships.
Recently, she was approached by the CEO of Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT to share her story in a short film. At first, she hesitated.
“It took me three days to say yes — this was so far out of my comfort zone,” she says.
“But my new mantra is ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway.’”
That mindset has guided her through every challenge, from rehab sessions to learning a completely new sport and stepping into the national spotlight.
Turning Challenge into Opportunity
At ARC, we see stories like Reema’s as powerful reminders of what’s possible when rehabilitation meets determination. Our clinicians support people to rebuild strength, confidence, and independence — and sometimes, that journey leads to unexpected passions, like competitive sport.
Wheelchair basketball has helped Reema strengthen her community, find a new purpose, and explore a renewed sense of empowerment.
“It’s not just about sport — it’s about connection, confidence, and proving to myself that I can do hard things.”
Celebrating Courage
We couldn’t be prouder to see one of our ARC clients take her rehab journey to such inspiring heights. Reema’s story is a celebration of resilience, and a reminder that life after injury or diagnosis can still be full of possibility.
