Congratulations to our Gold Star Award Winner Mark
Mark has a rare, neurological condition called CANVAS, which stands for Cerebellar Ataxia, Neuropathy, and Vestibular Areflexia Syndrome. It is a rare genetic neurological disorder characterised by a combination of symptoms affecting the cerebellum (which controls coordination), peripheral nerves, and the vestibular system (which helps maintain balance). Mark is not only dedicated to improving his own outcomes, he hopes to raise awareness of this condition and he supports ongoing research to improve the outcomes of others affected by this condition.
Mark works with several different disciplines to address the variety of symptoms of his condition and work towards his goal. With his physiotherapist, Mark works on vestibular exercises to maintain balance and reduce dizziness, gait retraining to improve walking speed, and ability to dual task to reduce risk of falls in busy environments. With his EPs, he focuses on strength and conditioning which help improve his functional strength required for the physical work he does around his house. Mark also works with his Occupational Therapists on fatigue management strategies and upper limb dexterity, which allow him to get the most out of his day and remain independent.

Now aside from the serious stuff, Mark is a teller of jokes, maker of his own gin and designated handy-man in his household. Mark brings a positive attitude to all his therapy sessions and we are very proud of all his achievements. Despite having a degenerative neurological disorder which has symptoms that can severely impact his participation in work, physical activity, hobbies, and looking after his family, Mark has found a way to apply his therapy skills to real life allowing him to keep doing what he loves.
