Congratulations to Ian for such incredible results in a short period of time, and completely online! Keep up the great work!
Ian completed his initial assessment via Telehealth in March 2020. Ian had a stroke 30 years ago which left him with reduced strength and coordination on his right side. His wife, Trish, is an ARC PD Warrior and encouraged Ian to get assessed. Together they work full time as realtors in a high stress industry. Ian expressed his main problems were pain in his feet, difficulty with dual tasking in busy environments and reduced balance, especially on uneven ground.
In the initial assessment, it took Ian 9.9 seconds to walk 10m at a normal speed and 22.2 seconds when he was asked to count at the same time, indicating difficulty walking and thinking about something else. It took Ian 4.6 seconds to turn 360 degrees on the spot. He was able to balance on one leg for 11 and 6 seconds on his left and right leg, respectively.
Ian’s sessions consisted of several complex exercises that required motor and cognitive dual tasking, balance exercises to assist with proprioception, lower limb and core strengthening and education on pain and self-management.
After only 4 weeks of intensive physiotherapy, Ian halved the time it took him to walk and count, completing the 10m walk test in 10.6 seconds! He turned 360 degrees on the spot in 2.4 seconds. He was able to balance on one leg for 48 and 11 seconds on his left and right leg, respectively and felt more confident in his balance. Ian has a better understanding of what pain is and why we experience it, as well as additional strategies to help manage it.
