Beck is up and walking for the first time in over a year!
We first started working with Beck in June this year at which time she had been needing to use her wheelchair full time as her way of getting around. She has been battling her Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) for more than a year since diagnosis and for some time before that too.
Beck is fiercely independent, and continues to work and be active socially. However, not being able to stand to do things or walk around her home was frustrating her and she was eager to explore options to get her function for walking back.
In the time we have been working with her, Beck has been incredibly motivated and open to trying all sorts of things – even when they might on first appearances seem a little daunting or beyond her. She has fearlessly thrown herself into rehab and we are thrilled to share that she is now independent in standing in her own kitchen to make a cup of tea and is able to walk in her home with a walking pole by herself!
Beck has exceeded hers and our initial goals and the new goal is now for her to be able to walk up stairs to access her friends’ homes, and to be able to walk in her garden with the aid of walking poles. We are confident this is within reach and are excited to continue this rehab journey with her.
FND is a complex condition that can feel overwhelming for people to try to manage and know where to start with therapy but we believe Beck is an amazing example of someone who has taken the bull by the horns and is regaining control and most importantly her quality of life. We are all enormously proud of you Beck!
