A Year in Review
What an exciting year the SDA OT team have had! Before June last year we were inundated with referrals needing specific support to assist NDIS participants to apply for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). This is a new kind of funding for accommodation for people with extreme functional impairment or a very high need of one to one support and in need of a customised housing solution. Occupational Therapists are very well trained to look at someone’s living situation holistically and provide the clinical justification for a customised environment that could assist the person to work towards their goals. OTs are pivotal in the SDA eligibility process.
We welcomed Kate in Spring last year when the referrals for housing plans were in full swing for various SDA apartment projects, where brand new wheelchair accessible apartments with home automation and on-site support were being built. The team were so excited to be a part of these pioneering SDA housing projects.
We welcomed two more team members this year, Sophie and Rachael, both of whom have been instrumental in supporting a range of people to apply for eligibility. We are in the process of working with groups of people on the Autism spectrum to apply for robust housing and we are breaking new ground assisting people to understand how to own a home under SDA.
Once people were deemed eligible for SDA by the NDIA, and had decided to move into their own new homes, we worked hard to trial various new technologies and specialised equipment. We submitted requests for all the equipment required for these people to be as independent as possible and to fully utilise their new environments. We set up wheelchair clinics, bed clinics and hoist and sling clinics to provide timely and efficient ways to ensure essential equipment was ready for the build and the participants when they moved.
It has taken a lot of team work to create such life changing outcomes. The OT SDA team would like to thank the ARC leadership team for your unwavering support and the administrative team for helping us enormously to work through the funding and billing processes that are very complicated.
It has been such an action packed year and the outcomes have been so rewarding. We continue to learn more and more everyday about working within this new area of NDIA funding and passing on the knowledge to our clients and colleagues.
