Mary wins our gold star of the week this week. In early February this year Mary had a fall at home which resulted in a fractured right hip. She was taken to hospital where she had surgery to repair her hip. However, as she woke up after surgery it became apparent that Mary had suffered a stroke during the operation and had significant right sided weakness. At the time Mary was unable to participate in rehabilitation and was discharged to a nursing home.
However, Mary and her family were convinced she wasn’t done with yet and arranged for one of our Senior Neurological Physiotherapists, Alison Wighton, to come out and see Mary in the nursing home. At that time Mary was unable to sit up in a chair, and spent her day either in bed or a large reclining chair.
Mary had a combination of weakness and extreme fear of falling, which was preventing her sitting on her own. Through much hard work and perseverance (from both Mary and Alison!) Mary can now sit up on her own which has enabled her daughter to take her for lovely long walks to nearby cafes in a wheelchair.
Mary has now started working on standing with the goal of attending her son’s wedding in August with the assistance of her family. Stay tuned for more updates on Mary’s progress. Well done Mary on your hard work and achievements.
