ARC has a brand new program designed for those with Parkinson’s disease, using our purpose built hydrotherapy pool to work you hard and help you get the most out of therapy.
Those of you who are familiar with our PD Warrior program will know the importance of high intensity, exaggerated movements that are at the core of our training principles. Whilst we can successfully modify the PD Warrior program to take into account any other problems you may have, for those who have major joint or balance issues trying the exercises in water can be a great way to work you hard but in a safer, more comfortable environment.
The buoyancy of the water is fantastic for balance difficulties, often meaning you can manage exercises without holding on that you would really struggle with outside the pool. The warmth of the water is great for those with sore or stiff muscles and joints and can make movements more comfortable, along with reducing the amount of impact. Others simply prefer working out in the water. For anyone who finds they are prone to overheating during exercise, the warm water can also be a great solution as it helps to keep the core body temperature more stable. The water also provides resistance to movement, meaning you really do get a great workout and can pump up that effort level.
Whilst the research that PD Warrior is based on is land based therapy, the core principles applied during this hydrotherapy class are the same, concentrating on high intensity and large movements, just in the pool setting. The circuit is run using 2 minute stations in the pool, with a maximum of 3 participants to give you plenty of space to move freely. The session runs for an hour, and can also be delivered in a one to one environment where needed. Our pool is usually around mid-torso height on most people (depending on how tall you are!), and no swim skills are needed. The pool is accessed via steps, but we also have a chair hoist available if needed. We have full changing and shower facilities, all you need is your swimmers and a towel. Your head will stay above water throughout the session, although you may get the odd splash!
