Following the successful completion of the training course, ARC Physiotherapists Lyndsay Hendry and Lynn Tullock are certified to assess, custom fit and develop training programs using the Saebo© arm training device.
The SaeboFlex© is a dynamic hand splint that can assist certain individuals following stroke and other neurological problems to regain functional use of their affected hand. Inability to open the hand is a common problem in patients with neurological problems such as stroke. This can be due to severe spasticity and weakness that makes grasp release training extremely difficult.
The SaeboFlex© works by holding the wrist and hand in a functional position, whilst a unique spring system allows the fingers and thumb to open and close. The arm device and training program allows patients to use their arm and hand in therapy with much of the theory behind the SaeboFlex© enabling increased practice and repetition. With the SaeboFlex©, patients have the ability to perform grasp and release activities such as picking up cups, balls and small items. Not only has this been shown to relieve spasticity and tension in the hand, this can also encourage greater movement and strength at the affected shouler. The SaeboFlex© can be a valuable tool to enable greater independence in practice. It is this mass, task orientated practice which drives neuroplasticity, optimising motor recovery and long term recovery in the upper limb following stroke or brain injury.
It is recommended that the SaeboFlex© is incorporated into an intensive exercise program initially to ensure correct fitting, exercise prescription and to facilitate improved function of the affected hand. The SaeboFlex© is appropriate for most stroke survivors who have limited capacity to open the hand independently and has been shown to be of benefit in some individuals many years after the original stroke. More information on the SaeboFlex© system and other Saebo© products can be found at www.saebo.com
The physiotherapists at ARC are trained to provide other Saebo© products, including the SaeboReach© and SaeboStretch© and are able to design and progress a SaeboFlex© training program. If you would like to be assessed and fitted with a trial Saebo© product such as the SaeboFlex©, Advance Rehab Centre is excited to be the first private physiotherapy practice in Sydney to offer a ‘try before you buy’ Saebo©clinic.
The first clinic is being run on September the 20th, 2012 from 2pm to 5pm.
