The practice of yoga is thousands of years old, however the real health benefits of yoga are only now being uncovered with recent research studies supporting the regular practice of yoga for the improvement of several medical conditions.
A preliminary study conducted to investigate the benefits of Hatha yoga and meditation in patients with post polio syndrome found significant improvements were achieved via a regular practice. Yoga is particularly useful where more traditional methods of exercise may prove to be aggressive for those suffering with such conditions.
A regular yoga practice has been found to reduce the release of stress hormones in the body. Stress hormones have very significant physiological affects on the body often impacting on sleeping patterns, energy levels and healing time. However the frustration that may result from pain and disability associated with conditions such as polio can lead to high stress levels, it is in these instances where yoga may be most helpful, apart from reducing anxiety yoga improves muscle strength and endurance as well as increasing flexibility.
The gentle physical postures, meditation and breathing practices taken in a yoga class are effective in increasing positive feelings and wellbeing. These are effects that most of us would benefit from but perhaps no one more so than those living with physically debilitating conditions, and their carers, individuals that are at high risk of burn out, and fatigue.
Other common conditions that respond well to yoga include arthritis, poor balance, weakness, general stress and pre & post natal.
