Polio Australia hosted the first Polio Health & Wellness Retreat in Sydney between April 15th-17th. Styled as a networking, education and wellness experience, the weekend was a huge success with over 70 participants attending from all over Australia.
These days, the polio virus has largely been eradicated worldwide, but for thousands of polio survivors in Australia, they are now dealing with the late effects of the virus. The most common symptoms that we see in our centre are an unexplained increase in fatigue, significant muscle weakness, pain and loss of function.
Late last year, Advance Rehab Centre launched our “Polio clinic”, the first in Sydney since the 1980s. Offering specialised neuro-muscular orthotic, physiotherapy and occupational therapy consultations we were well placed to present at the retreat and were invited as plenary and workshop speakers. Opening the retreat as the key note speaker was a huge honour for me. It was a great opportunity to talk about the benefits that allied health services can provide for people with the late effects of polio and what a life-changing impact they can make. Over the two days the Advance Rehab Centre team willingly gave their time to present on six workshop topics ranging from “practical exercises for people with limited mobility”, “to brace or not to brace” and “strategies to keep the mind active”. They also provided subsidised consultations for orthotics, massage, acupuncture and occupational therapy. We would all like to thank Polio Australia for the wonderful weekend and we look forward to working together in future.
